Start with the space around the window
Blinds usually keep the treatment close to the opening. They can be useful where furniture sits nearby or where you want a clean outline. Curtains need space for the track and the fabric when drawn back; that extra fabric can add softness and visual weight.
Check doors, handles, radiators or furniture before deciding. A finish that looks good in a photograph may be inconvenient if it blocks everyday access.
Compare light and privacy separately
With Venetian blinds, you can tilt slats to change the direction of light. Roller fabrics offer different levels of screening, from a filtered view to opaque blockout. Curtains depend on their fabric, lining and fitting in a similar way.
Do not assume a sheer fabric provides privacy after dark. If the room is lit from inside, visibility can change. Opaque fabric and careful fitting are important when night-time privacy is the priority.
Look at the whole price
Material, window size, hardware and installation affect the cost of either option. Compare quotes that include the same scope, rather than comparing one fabric price with a complete fitted system.
For a restrained finish on a sensible budget, prioritise the rooms with the most demanding light or privacy needs. Coordinating colours can make different treatments feel consistent throughout the home.
Think about cleaning and daily use
Care requirements vary by material; neither blinds nor curtains are automatically maintenance-free. Consider how easily you can reach the window and whether the treatment is exposed to cooking residue, condensation or frequent handling.
